On the back of my recent Mars post I thought that I would have a look to see what I had in respect of Venus.
To my surprise even after excluding Boney M's Night Flight to Venus on account that it is rubbish it turms out that I've more songs with Venus in the title than I have about Mars. Enough even for a second post somewhere further on down the line.
I said in a recent post that I like my Friday music bouncy and at least a couple of these fit that bill. One that certainly does is Destination Venus a 1978 single by the great Edinburgh band The Revillos on the Sire label
We move from Edinburgh to Athens, Georgia for the second offering with53 Miles from Venus the last track on Wild Planet the second album by The B52's from 1980 on Sire
I don't have any records by Be-Bop Deluxe. I was wondering whether I should until I Googled them and the words Progessive Rock popped up. I'll maybe stick with the few songs I have on file including one with a good prog rock title Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus.
Somewhat controversially I'm going for a band rather that a song for my last offering. I couldn't resist featuring Cleaners from Venus who appeared in a recent post from Brian . I've pencilled in Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 should I ever get round to a second post.
The Rezillos - Destination Venus
The B52's - 53 Miles West of Venus
Be-Bop Deluxe - Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus
No Boney M? No Bananarama? This is a travesty. Fortunately.
ReplyDeleteVolume 2 maybe or then again maybe not
DeleteI have a few if you do plan a Volume 2. As well as Alyson's suggestion I can offer Freedy Johnston, Elizabeth Cook, Mink de Ville, Prefab Sprout and...er... Frankie Avalon
DeleteI had planned a Solar System in Song series to take over from my Full Moon in Song series but not easy once you get past Mars and Venus.
ReplyDeleteFor the record I hadn't heard of any of these Venus songs so it would have been the Bananarama song from me but the original, by Dutch band Shocking Blue. It appeared on the soundtrack to Queen's Gambit on Netflix recently.
Anything by Pluto Shervington!
DeleteAnd Freddie Mercury of course but just too obvious.
DeleteYou are of course wrong about Be Bop Deluxe.
ReplyDeleteFor what its worth I quite like taht song
DeleteJet Silver is glam rock (or maybe art rock)
DeleteThe Wedding Present, Velvet Underground, Bjork, Super Furry Animals.. you know, this one could run into four or five volumes...
ReplyDeleteVenus in Furs by The VU, Venus as a Boy by Bjork, Big Eyed Beans from Venus by Capt Beefheart, Hey Venus by That Petrol Emotion (Weatherall remix too)
ReplyDeleteThe first two were contenders
DeleteWings covered both bases with their album Venus and Mars. Then you've got Television's exquisite Venus De Milo not to mention Venus in Blue Jeans (Jimmy Clanton (US) vs Mark Wynter (UK)) from 1962. George let you off lightly about the fantastic Be Bop Deluxe, don't believe everything (anything) you read on Google. I'd never describe BBD as prog rock - if anything they were a guitar rock band if you're looking for a category to put them in.
ReplyDeleteWow, a mess of great Venus suggestions in the posts and comments. Thanks for mentioning Cleaners From Mars, CC. I'll add Venus Stopped the Train by Jay Bennett and Edward Burch to this bunch.
ReplyDeleteBe Bop Deluxe are from just down the road from me in Wakefield. I was slightly taken by their track Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape and so ended up acquiring a compilation which hasn't had many spins, to be fair.
