Worlds in Collision

Very occasionally I feel that I have too many records. Indeed this thought occurred to me the other day when I stumbled across Worlds in Collision by Pere Ubu an album I have absolutely no recollection of acquiring and one that I can't remember ever having played.

Naturally I felt obliged to give it a spin and I'm pleased to say that it was a pleasant experience. From 1991 on the Fontana label it is the 8th album by the Cleveland band led by David Thomas. Classified as art punk/post punk/art rock/avant- rock there are some pretty obvious comparisons with Talking Heads which lets face it is no bad thing.

Any band who manage to include Yogi Bear in the lyrics of one of their songs are almost certainly guaranteed a place on these pages.

    1. They ought to all you to correct errors on these comments without having to delete the whole thing. All I said was that if I listen to them at all it is the earlier more experimental stuff like "Dub Housing".

  2. I sometimes feel that I have too many records as well, usually immediately after taking home a new purchase only to find a copy sitting on my shelves already.
I remember a certain bemusement in some quarters when Fontana signed Pere Ubu, it was an interesting move for all parties concerned. Waiting For Mary was a great single, though, like these tunes is a little of its time, sonically speaking. I'd like someone to get hold of the master tapes and de-1990s-mix this stuff.

    1. I just did that last weekend. It did occur to me that I might already have it, but I didn’t want to take the risk given that the shop was four hours away. Oh well, on to the sell pile.

    2. I'm in the process of making a spreadsheet which can be downloaded to my phone to eliminate this happening.
      A retirement project!

  3. I've just searched the spreadsheet for Pere Ubu. The nearest I have is an Arcade Fire album (The Suburbs) and a Mike Oldfield album. (I'm not fishing for a copy of you album, by the way)

  4. Before smart phones (remember that time?) I did actually print off a hard copy of my spreadsheet list of albums but.....stuffing a 34 page copy of it in my back pocket and consulting it several times during every record/CD shop visit proved a)ergonomically counter productive; b)physically uncomfortable and c) publicly embarrassing as in (look at that saddo over there - fuhgodsakegetalifeman). Since when I've taken buying duplicates, of which there have been many, on the chin.
As for Worlds In Collision, I bought this when it first came out and have probably never played it since a few spins at that time. I do still play Cloudland though but mainly I stick to their first 2 or 3 albums.
