Tambourine

I was quite chuffed to pick up Tambourine by Tift Merritt in a charity shop in Newton Stewart.
From 2004 and on the Lost Highway label it is the follow up to her 2002 debut Bramble Rose which I picked up around that time after seeing her live in Glasgow's Tron Bar.

Tambourine seems to have been critically well received. A mixture of country and soft soul it drew comparisons with the likes of Allison Moorer, Shelby Lynne and Maria McKee.
Indeed Maria is one of an impressive cast of fellow artists featuring on the album alongside the likes of Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from the Heartbreakers, Neil Casal and the Jayhawk's Gary Louris.
Another Jayhawks link in that the album is produced by George Drakoulias who produced the mighty Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass.
In short Alt Country royalty.

Her name is actually Catherine Tift Merritt. Dropping the Catherine seems to have been a sensible move.
She is still going strong with another 6 studio albums to her name the most recent of which have been on the Yep Roc label.

  3. I'm a fan, and with all due respect would say she's a cut above the others you mention. 'Another Country' is worth nabbing if you get the chance
