Rick Hall R.I.P.

2018 is only a couple of days old and sadly we have the first musical casualty in the shape of the legendary Rick Hall who died on 2nd January at the age of 85
The man who was the owner and proprietor of FAME Studios which put the small Alabama town of Muscle Shoals on the musical map and which produced some of the great Southern Soul records of all time.

If you don't already have it you should make it your business to acquire The Fame Studio Story 1961-1973 - Home of the Muscle Shoals Sound on Ace.
You should also get hold of Peter Guralnick's book Sweet Soul Music:Rhythm & Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom and Muscle Shoals the brilliant documentary from 2013

A true legend. Rest easy Rick

Clyde McPhatter -A Shot of Rhythm & Blues

  2. Just learned of this over at Drew’s place. An absolute giant. He will be missed. I guess we know what we will be listening to the rest of the week.

  3. The Fame set really is terrific, isn't it, CC? I also particularly like Clyde McPhatter's version of Arthur Alexander's disc and Etta James "Tell Mama."

Wasn't it Mrs. CC who bought it for you last Christmas?
