Covered by Cash - Highway Patrolman
A reasonably comfortable win last week for Johnny over Beck with his version of Rowboat but also an acknowledgement that the original was pretty tasty also.
That takes the score to Cash 7 The Rest 3.
In my Springsteen Covered series the Man in Black was soundly thrashed by the Boss for his version of Johnny 99. There were comments at the time that had I featured Highway Patrolman that it would have been a lot closer.
Time then to put that to the test. I agree that it is miles better than his take on Johnny 99 but anyone, even the great man himself, would be pushed to better any of the songs on Nebraska and here he falls just short.
Others, of course may choose to disagree.

Johnny Cash.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Johnny, but this one goes to Bruce.
ReplyDeleteBruce for me too.
ReplyDeleteIt pains me to say so, but Bruce
ReplyDeleteBruce's version for me.
ReplyDeleteI have mentioned before that I'm not a fan of Bruce Springsteen. But, and it surprises me to type this, Bruce's version is better than Johnny's.
ReplyDeleteBruce. Nebraska is a wonderful record.
ReplyDeleteI think I may have been one of those who suggested that comparing this song would have been a closer result.
ReplyDeleteIt is.
But Bruce still wins it.
Nebraska is unbeatable. (I think I had a rule about that, but I've forgotten it now.)
Ooh, difficult, not really keen on either version, and not keen on Bruce generally but I think that surprisingly (like SA) I'll have to go with him this time.
ReplyDeleteEven if I wasn't keen on Bruce--which I am--he'd still get the nod on this one.
ReplyDeleteBruuuuuce. Big Nebraska fan too. Was the only album I had by him for about 25 years.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say - but this round goes to Bruce
ReplyDeleteLate to the party, but going to go with Bruce too - The higher pitched voice sounds better for this song I think.
