You Can't Beat a Bit of Bully
Never mind Brexit or the spat with the Russians (whose bots are not yet boycotting me) it has been a sad week in the UK given that we have lost three cultural icons.
First there was a comedy genius in the shape of Ken Dodd dying at the ripe old age of 90.
Finally we all got a topical opportunity to wheel out the old joke.
"Ken Dodd died today"
"Did he?"
"No Doddie"
The old ones are the best.
Then we lost the mathematical genius Stephen Hawking at the age of 76 .Rol posted a fine Top 10 tribute over at his place on Thursday. An intellectual giant, socialist and an inspiration for anyone with a disability. And Stephen Hawking was pretty impressive as well!
Finally we lost a comedy AND a mathematical genius in the shape of former teacher Jim Bowen the brilliant host of the Bullseye darts game show at the age of 80 or twenty, twenty, double tops if you prefer.
Sadly the above news is the opposite of one of his many great catchphrases - Great, Smashing, Super
Rest easy gentlemen
Say Zuzu - Bull's Theme
Darts -Daddy Cool/The Girl Can't Help It

"Keep out of the Black and into the red, You get Nothing in this Game for 2 in a bed".
ReplyDeleteGosh CC, you're on fire today. Who knew that Jim Bowen (had he been a bit younger) could have been the lovechild of Doddy and Stephen Hawking.
ReplyDeleteA fine tribute to Jim, but where are "Tears" and "We Are The Diddymen"?
ReplyDeleteKen Dodd may have been funny, but as he was an arch-Thatcherite and tax-dodger I can't say I mourned his passing.
ReplyDeleteIn contrast, as someone pointed out on social media, Jim Bowen, when a contestant on Bullesye answered 'I'm unemployed' when asked what he did for a living, immediately and sincerely would offer his sympathies and acknowledge how hard things had become for working-class people in many parts of the UK. He, sadly, wouldn't last five minutes on modern-era TV quiz shows with their dog-eat-dog attitude to everything.
"...at the age of 80 or twenty, twenty, double tops if you prefer..." - nice work, CC.
ReplyDelete"An intellectual giant, socialist and an inspiration for anyone with a disability. And Stephen Hawking was pretty impressive as well!"
ReplyDeleteWeyhey! Comedy's loss is the blogging world's gain.
Like JC, I far preferred Jim Bowen to Ken Dodd.
The deaths of Hawking and Jim Bowen happened on the same day but as someone on Twitter said "Stephen Hawking observed the golden rule, non dart players go first". A Ken Dodd joke if ever there was one but as JC points out Dodd was tainted with Thatcher affiliations so it's Jim Bowen for me everytime. True hearts will out.
