Burns Night

It's the 25th of January and normally Scots the world over would be celebrating the birthday of Robert Burns  with Burns Suppers.

A combination of poems, toasts, songs  a meal of haggis, neeps and tatties and perhaps the occassional wee dram. Sadly any being held this year are likely to be via Zoom

We will be doing our bit. Some poetry may be recited, some haggis may be eaten (by me , not the veggie Mrs CC), some drams may be drunk and some music will be played.

The last holiday purchase The Songs of Robert Burns by Eddi Reader will be looked out leading to Eddi's second appearance in as many days. There are also some others out there

Some hae meat and canna eat, -- And some wad eat that want it; But we hae meat, and we can eat, Sae let the Lord be thankit.

  1. Glad you shared this today as we too have our haggis, beeps and tattles ready for tonight’s “feast for two”. Will be a nice musical accompaniment as I don’t have much Burns in my collection.

Interestingly, I noticed the number of vegetarian haggi on the supermarket shelves matched the number of meaty ones for the first time this year but a lot of leftover haggis if you bought two I suppose. Enjoy.

  2. I had a couple of splendid veggie haggis based meals during a weekend in Edinburgh 15 years ago. I've never partaken of the real thing, so can't compare, but I remember them being very tasty. There must be loads more options available by now. Surprised Linda McCartney or Quorn haven't got in on the veggie haggis act.

  3. Gaughan's version of "Now Westlin Winds" is beautiful. Have you heard The Tannahill Weavers version of "Auld Lang Syne"?
