Vintage Country Vinyl - Rosanne Cash

We step forward slightly in time this week to the 1980's when shoulders were big, hair was big but Country music was generally poor. Roseanne Cash ticked all three boxes.
Retrospective 1979-1989 covers her five albums from this period and is by and large pretty poor fayre. The songs are produced by her then husband Rodney Crowell and quite frankly it shows. They are pretty indicative of what was going on in Country music at that time until it was rescued by the likes of Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam and Lucinda Williams and the Alternative Country movement.
It's not as though she is a bad singer. I have her 2006 album Black Cadillac and 2009's The List which are both terrific albums.
She has also written a book Composed: A Memoir which is an interesting read

Quality control dictates that this series has pretty much run it's course although I may eke out another couple of weeks yet. We'll see

  2. I do love me some Rosanne Cash. Thoughtful, intentional & literal. I have many of her albums and I still like to listen to then. I've always had a sweetness for 10 Song Demos, but her last collection The River & The Thread is beautiful. Storied & tuneful. I had the wonderful opportunity to see her perform the entire album live. Because I went by myself and the woman selling the tickets pitied me for going alone (I was happy solo) she gave me front row center. But I could've been in the last row last seat and I would have been happy. Crackerjack band! The second set was songs from her immense catalogue. At a show many years before she took audience requests. I called out one of my faves the Benmont Tench penned "Why Don't You Quit Leaving Me Alone" but she said she didn't think she could remember all the words. I offered to assist. Ha! She promised the next time she performed there. Didn't happen but it was a cool music memory. I love the tracks you chose CC. Thanks for posting RC. "Quality Control"??? The quality here needs no control. Just seems natural & tres fun!!

  3. Good one, George. Maybe not the era she should or will be remembered for, but there have been some fine songs along the way,

  5. As you know, I am not the greatest country fan on earth but this are very good tunes indeed. Please think one more time about your quality control because this series made fun to me.
