Two Eras of Elvis

1978

We went to see Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool the other night at the GFT (Glasgow Film Theatre) . I thought that it was alright  but nothing special probably because it is not really my kind of film. Mrs CC enjoyed it though. A highlight, for me at any rate, was the inclusion of Pump It Up by fellow Liverpudlian Elvis Costello on the soundtrack . Taken from This Year's Model his second album from 1979.
There is also a new Elvis song You Shouldn't Look at Me That Way accompanying the closing credits.

Fast forward a couple of days and I am playing 1994's Brutal Youth on the commute to and from work. He has had some good albums since then  but for me this was probably his last truly great album.

Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Pump it Up

Elvis Costello - Still Too Soon to Know

  1. Not sure if I'd call Brutal Youth truly great, but only because the bar was so high from his earlier releases. In any event, as a performer Costello was absolutely on top of his game when it came out. GTFP, who as I recall was very pregnant with our first, and I saw EC & Attractions at the Universal in LA. If it wasn't the best performance I've ever seen by Elvis (and I've seen quite a few) it was in the top 2 or 3. Great stuff.

  2. Where to rate Brutal Youth...top end of any EC album listing, but for me, maybe closer to the middle than the top. I do love Kinder Youth and Rocking Horse Road from the album.

  3. My missus is the EC fan in our house. She loses the faith tho' from Brutal Youth onwards. As a lesser fan, Spike is the last of his that I know well. As I'm typing this though I think, bloody hell that was almost 30 years ago, maybe I (we) should try a bit harder. I'll get back to you.

  4. you're not wrong....and it's no coincidence that his autobiography also gets boring from this point in time on...he becomes too much of a luvvie for my liking.
