Vietnam

I was recently thinking about songs about Vietnam. I think this was following on from the death of Mohammad Ali.

Anyway the first one that immediately sprung to mind was Vietnam by the great Jimmy Cliff.
Whilst not directly attacking the war it is definitely an anti-war song and highlights the impact war has on families.
Due to abject laziness on my part I have not scoured the shelves for other songs namechecking Vietnam.
Rather I have opted for another Jimmy Cliff number.
However, when you see what it is I am not anticipating too many objections.

  3. Check out Johnny & Jon's 'Christmas In Vietnam', CC: brilliant tune!

Also New Order once did a cover of that Cliff/Vietnam - tune, rather a fine one at that, I would think ...

It also is on the Kent compilation A Soldier's Sad Song which is highly recommended

  7. The two that immediately sprung to mind were 'Commando' by The Ramones and 'Born in the USA' by Bruce Springsteen, though the latter doesn't actually namecheck Vietnam directly.
Having said all that, your own selections today are pretty darned great.

  8. I've been thinking about doing a Top Ten Vietnam Songs for ages, but too much choice always puts me off. Beyond your own choice and Bruce and Bill above, I'd have to include John Grant, The Doors (obviously!) and Billy Joel's incredible Goodnight Saigon.
