The Last Paperclips have been Counted

Today is my last working day.

I officially retire on 1st August but a combination of leave and phased retiral means I finish today. For the last 36 years I have been working in Administration in the NHS mostly within Mental Health in Lanarkshire.

My friends cruelly say that my job is to count the paperclips. Well someone has to! Believe it or not there is slightly more to it than that.

By and large I have largely enjoyed my work. I will miss the camaraderie and the laughs with my colleagues and many aspects of my role. I will not miss the largely unnecessary scrutiny, having to get up at 6.30 and the winter commute.

I don't think I'll be bored. I've plenty to do including devoting a bit more time to the blog with one or two new series in the pipeline.

Soup Dragons - I'm Free

Tom Robinson Band - I Shall be Released

Toyah - I Want to be Free

  1. Well done! And I am very impressed that in your last 29 days of employment you get paid for doing nothing. As for not getting up at 6.30, I still get up at that time (Lucy does not walk herself)

    1. I bet you were expecting some needlessly cruel and sarcastic remark, weren't you????

  2. Leaving aside the fact that a slip of a lad like you is clearly far too young to be retiring, many congratulations.

I assume the charity shops of Scotland have been alerted to the need to recruit additional staff from 1 August onwards?

  3. Will there now be a paper clip shortage in NHS Lanarkshire?

  5. Congratulations! I'm semi-envious... I would have been more envious a couple of months ago, but less so now.

More time to write the blog AND visit charity shops! A win-win for all of us.

  7. Are you getting more compliments here than from your soon to be ex-colleagues at work?

  10. Congratulations CC - enjoy your time, and hope you don't miss the paperclips too much. I can always send you some if you get a little wistful for the old days. In the meantime I wonder if you'll be one of those many retirees who start to wonder how they ever had the time to work?!
Love your appropriate choice of songs too.

  14. A momentous day indeed. Congratulations. After working for so many years, I found the final few days, as retirement day approached, a pretty surreal experience but have never looked back - hope it's the same for you. Eight years on though I still have 'last day at work' dreams where I haven't quite finished whatever it was I was working on before walking out for the final time! Incidentally, paperclips in my time were those 'proper' silver metal jobs - none of your modern fancy dan multi-coloured plastic and rubber affairs!

  15. Congratulations on your retirement, CC. If that means more time to do the things you love and more blog posts for us to enjoy, then everybody's happy!

  16. Happy retirement CC and sorry I missed this one last week. Sounds as if we did very similar jobs and yes, much more to it than just counting paper clips! As someone who jumped ship early a few years back, you will miss the day to day camaraderie, but I still keep up with my lot and now can enjoy their company without having all the stressful deadlines as well. A great time to do it as well at the start of the summer - I look forward to hearing about your new endeavours (and the new series, plural).
