Nothing Compares 2U

Ok - let's get the elephant in the room out of the way before we crack on.
Whereas the late great Prince was obviously a musical genius he was pretty rubbish at writing and spelling properly.
Anyone under 40 can probably see nothing wrong with the title of this post but using text abbreviations instead of proper words  for both writing and texting is just plain wrong.

His version of the song is the live version with Rosie Gaines from the Ultimate Prince compilation.
I'm sure that his Royal Purpleness would acknowledge that it shades into insignificance when compared to the other two versions featured.
The King just about shades it if only for the use of proper spelling.

  1. Two tremendous tracks today.

  2. Unsurprisingly, it's Kenny for me from these three as well, although I did once witness Prince perform a virtually unaccompanied live version which, in my memory at least, knocks the rest into a cocked hat.

  3. I have a theory that Prince invented text-speak.

I think I recall that version The Swede refers to. I'm very much looking forward to this new Prince album that's just him and a piano.

  4. Sinead's version is the one for me- not to decry the other 2.

  5. I remember reading an article a while back about how abbreviations such as '4 U' were found in some communications from many years back, can't remember if it was 19th century or much earlier but it was really interesting (of course now I can't find the article anywhere!)
In the same vein my mum taught me that famous one which I think she'd been shown when she was a girl in the 1930s:
    "YY UR
    YY UB
    ICUR
    YY 4 me"
    Sorry Prince!
