And I Need You More Than Want You ...
By way of an apology for subjecting you to the abomination that was Smokey Robinson's version of Wichita Lineman I give you Glenn Campbell singing three absolute classic Jimmy Webb songs.
Surely one of the greatest musical partnerships in history with them working on over a hundred song together - not all as good as these I'll wager but surely all better than Smokey's
I have a live Glen Campbell where Wichita Lineman and Galveston appear as part of a medley. The record should probably be sub titled Glen Campbell - The Cocaine Years and as it also features Amazing Grace and Mull of Kintyre it is probably best avoided.
Listen and weep Smokey
Glen Campbell -Wichita Lineman
Glen Campbell - By The Time I Get to Phoenix

Heavenly all three of 'em.
ReplyDeleteIs this a cheap cash-in album, with live versions? And why no Mull Of Kintyre? After all, you've posted some drivel already this week
ReplyDeleteThese are from a Greatest Hits album, The one with Mull of Kintyre is indeed a cheap live one.Even I wouldn't subject you to that!
DeleteWichita Lineman & God Only Knows - the 2 greatest ever pop ballads. (Oooh that's controversial!)
ReplyDeleteBut maybe true!
DeleteNo, I would agree with that.
DeleteCertainly not far off. They are certainly more influential than anyone will ever give them credit.
DeleteGlutton for punishment as I am, I headed over to YouTube to check out Glen's 'Mull of Kintyre'. It's a lot better than Smokey's 'Wichita Lineman' I can tell you that much. Glen even plays the bagpipe solo himself, which is impressive.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a nice way to cleanse the palette after Smokey's low point.
ReplyDeleteJust listening to Glen Campbell's version (thanks a LOT Swede). My wife is singing along. Can I erase those minutes of my life please?
ReplyDeleteIt does appear that Mr Campbell is playing the bagpipes
ReplyDeleteI like Campbell's version of Wichita Lineman. I know the song because Johnny Cash did a cover which packs an emotional punch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwG9mypJhoU
ReplyDeleteThree of his greatest, Mr. CC! I actually enjoyed hearing Smokey's debacle (once), in the same way I sometimes get a kick out of watching those low-budget "B" movies of the '50s (such as "Attack of the 50-Foot Woman." ;-)
ReplyDeleteJimmy Webb, genius. Simple as that.
