An A to Z of American Cities - R

Rockaway Beach ,Queens

This week was an absolute doddle compared to Q from last week. There were plenty of R suggestions in the comments but I came up with five of my own.

My first thought was Reno off the brilliant Jonathan Goes Country album by Jonathan Richman. Reno is in Nevada with a population in the region of 264K. Apparently it is known as The Biggest Little City in the World and is most famous for its casinos.

Rockville a city in and the county seat of Montgomery County, Maryland (population 67K) popped up a couple of times in the comments given that R.E.M. have a song called (Don't Go Back to) Rockville on their 1984 album Reckoning and is about Mike Mills not wanting his girlfriend Ingridd Schorr to return to Rockville.

The picture above is of Rockaway Beach in the borough of Queens in New York City. So why is it featured here? It is because I suspect that it is a better picture that I could find of Rockaway Beach the city in Tillamook County, Oregon with a population of 1441. Actually, I take that back as there are some lovely pictures of there also.

Some blues for you now courtesy of Cephas and Wiggins who are singing about Richmond the capital city of the Commonwealth of Virginia which was first incorporated in 1742. It has been an independent city since 1871.

Finally I had a lovely song called Rochester in my digital library. Unfortunately there was no  information as to the artist. I trawled around to no avail until finally I resorted to downloading the Shazam app. I now know it is by Michael Shelley from an album called Half Empty released in 1997. An artist I intend to explore further here

It is S next week which should be relatively straightforward.

Jonathan Richman - Reno

R.E.M. - (Don't Go Back To) Rockville

Ramones - Rockaway Beach

Cephas & Wiggins - Richmond Blues

Michael Shelley - Rochester

    3. If this is becoming on open forum, can I please give a shout out to the nice woman behind the till at the Egg Stores in Stoke Newington, who was very patient with me and my friend Malcolm when we went in there on Friday while in a foolish mood.

    4. The first thing we asked was whether she knew the way to San Jose, whether she was going to San Francisco, or if anybody was going to San Antone. She even remained patient when I pointed to the bus stop opposite and asked what number bus went to St Cloud.

    5. George, I've had a look at my blog settings and it seems to periodically default to comments from Google account holders only. I've removed it (again) so it should hopefully be a veritable free-for-all from now on!

  3. I'm a nearly life-long resident of Montgomery County, MD (population over 1 million), and while I've never lived in Rockville, I work there, on what used to be a large dairy farm that was redeveloped into homes and office parks. I certainly shared Mike Mills' sentiments in 1984 (when I was attending university in Connecticut), and it's still not a place I'd want to live if I were single, but as a middle-aged dad I can see the appeal.
