Third and Fourth and Fifth

 2021 Charity Shop Purchases 24 - Soft Machine - Fourth/Fifth

Right let's get this out of the way.
I could make the excuse that I was confusing them with The Soft Boys of whom Robyn Hitchcock was once a member.
I could also say that I was vaguely aware that both Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt had once been members.
Also I could say that they were 50p each and I thought that maybe I should give them a listen to see if they were any good.
However there is still no excuse to subjecting my ears to this absolute drivel.
A combination of jazz and prog - the worse of two possible worlds.

From 1971,1972 and 1973 and all on the Columbia label. Thank God Glam Rock, Bowie and Bolan were just round the corner.
I'm sure that there are some of you out there who like this sort of thing. If so you are welcome to them .
Otherwise it's back to charity they go.

Today's song Kings and Queens is from Fourth and is chosed purely on the basis that it is one of the shortest numbers.

  1. I got to 2mins 37 seconds and thought "jesus wept this is pish" and at 3mins 48 seconds those were still my thoughts. I persevered until the very end.

  3. The closest I ever got to liking Soft Machine was the delightful Kevin Ayers' album "Whatevershebringswesing" - especially "Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes"
Listening to that "Kings And Queens" noodling is painful.

  4. I didn't mind the first 14 seconds. After that, bobbins.

  5. Hahahaha - are you sure you were playing it at the right speed? Oh I see, it was a CD! Soft Machine never 'troubled the scorers' for me but they were spoken of quite highly by some people who admittedly were quite high at the time! One person's avant garde is another person's pretentious noodlers. Life's too short for pretentious noodling.

  6. Personally I love `em! Seen them live a few times, mind you I do like a bit of Jazz/rock. If they are still available I will happily nab them, and pay you postage. I was surprised to see these on your blog, I usually stop by here for the Americana and similar.
