Covered By Cash - Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down

A new Saturday Covers series for you today - but with a twist.
Instead of comparing an artists songs with covers by others we are comparing songs covered by Johnny Cash with the originals.
Usual rules apply and I have more than enough material for the first to ten being the winner

I think that I probably heard Johnny's version of Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down before I heard the Kris Kristofferson original. Good though it is it doesn't hold a candle to the original. Also Kris looses the G's while Johnny keeps his.
A thought . When Glen Campbell died Rhinestone Cowboy was regularly trotted out as opposed to his greatest song Wichita Lineman.
When Kris finally shuffles off this mortal coil we shall probably get Me and Bobby McGee played more than this. Wrongly in my opinion.

So it is Kris for me this week. Others, of course may choose to disagree.
Another compare and contrast next Saturday

  1. I will be the first up to disagree, but they are both magnificent

  2. Great to see a new compare and contrast from you although when I first saw the title I thought Jez was guest hosting!

I wrote a whole post earlier this year about this song and at the time think I enjoyed Johnny's version best but the passage of time has made me come round to the original from Kris - From the heart as opposed to perfectly executed.

  3. Kris, but of course Johnny's version is great, too.

  4. I think JC's version sounds a little too upbeat. Kris sounds like I felt after a weekend on the lash with only the thought of Irn Bru and bacon rolls for Sunday brunch to save me.

I'd like to put in a good word for Jerry Lee Lewis who does a damned fine version on his album "Mean Old Man".

  5. I'm inclined to agree with Gram Lynch. The Man in Black's version, wonderful though it is in isolation, sounds positively jaunty when compared to the gravitas of Kris' original.
    1-0 to KK from me.

  6. They do have a different tone, don't they? Going with Kris by a whisker. I suspect Johnny will get my vote most of the time from here on out, especially in the later years.

  7. Yes! Another Compare and Contrast series to brighten up the weekends, thanks CC.
This is a tough call as, like others have said, I like them both, but I'll go with Kris too and again as has been already said, it's because of its more suitable low-key mood.

  8. I'd normally go for Johnny Cash soley because, well, it's Johnny Cash. But here it has to be KK. He plays the part of a down-and-out so brilliantly. Cash's version is far too upbeat and laden with unnecessary extras - string, brass, tubular bells!?! It doesn't sound as genuine as Kris'.

  9. I love Kris Kristofferson. I love Johnny Cash. I love this new series! Yay!

But yes, Kris wins this one, obviously.

  10. It is hard to decide because I like them both much. But I have to agree TheRobster in fact that no one sung this song so down and out like KK. Cash's version is great but he made it at the best at his last performance: https://youtu.be/C5iX569JIFM

  11. KK for me. Johhny's version kicks on a bit, jaunty almost. Funnily enough, this comparison exercise makes me think that even the original could be more parched, hungover still. Clearly neither of them has been as eyeball-scrapingly damaged as I've had the misfortune to be in a previous life ha ha!
