Jackie Brown

On Wednesday's Burnt Offerings post I mentioned that The Delphonics first came to my attention when their song Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) featured in Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film Jackie Brown.

This led to some reminiscence in the comments section from Brian , Alyson and Jamie about discovering them in the same way and the tape in the car scene.
I can't find a clip of that so this will have to do

In addition to introducing me to the Delphonics it also brought Bobby Womack to my attention.
I had vaguely heard of him but the fabulous Across 110th Street which starts the film completely blew me away and led to me seeking out more of his stuff.

I've posted it before but make no apologies for posting it again.

The Delfonics - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)

Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street

  1. I'm a huge Bobby Womack fan. Across 110th Street was the song he & composer/arranger J.J. Johnson wrote for the film of the same name. Originally listed as a "blaxploitation" movie, I think it's now considered a cult classic. Womack also contributed a great ballad "(If You Don't Want My Love) Give It Back" to the film soundtrack.

  2. What a lovely surprise for a Sunday morning waking up to the dulcet tones of The Delfonics. Thanks for that.

Here's the thing - Mr WIAA commented that the intro sounds just like the intro to White Horses by Jacky and he has a point (most people our age have very fond memories of that kids telly show and I would wager you do too).

As for the Bobby Womack song, fantastic stuff - How about a new series on the music of the "blaxploitation" movie? As for me I'm off to listen to some more Delfonics, and a bit of Isaac Hayes!

  3. That's where I first heard Across 110th Street too and like you I had a 'wow!' moment. Amazing song.

  5. 'Across 110th Street' is a fabulous, fabulous song, but 6Music appear to believe that it's the only one Bobby ever recorded - they play it regularly, to the exclusion of virtually anything else from his huge catalogue.
