Three things I read on the BBC report that I didn't know: 1. He helped Phil Spector hone his Wall of Sound; 2. He filled in for Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys; 3. He played on Daydrream Believer, Strangers in the Night and Viva Las Vegas.
I have a snippet on mini disc of him playing a guitar solo from back then Only a couple of minutes and I have no idea what it is called but it is quite superb
Yes, Wichita Lineman is one of my all-time favourite songs, it transcends everything. RIP Glen.

A sad loss.

Apparently he didn't play on Viva Las Vegas, that's a bit of an urban myth. The only Elvis song he played on was What'd I Say.
DeleteHaving seen him play guitar live - even in his latter days - I can say that he was incredible.
A true legend.
My mother saw the Beach Boys in Japan while Campbell filled in for Brian Wilson. One of many memorable shows she saw while living there as a teenager.
DeleteAlzheimer's is a particularly cruel and insidious disease. Rest easy Mr Campbell.
ReplyDeleteA definite touch of sadness in the air today because of this news - The three songs you featured here were just perfect pieces of popular music.
ReplyDeleteWichita Lineman would be 2nd only to God Only Knows in my favourite songs.
