Hawley Mackerel

I really should like Richard Hawley much more than I actually do.
He has an impeccable pedigree, I mean to say he was a member of Longpigs and Pulp for goodness sake.
He writes good songs, is a fine musician and has a strong and distinct voice which puts me in mind of the likes of Scott Walker and Marc Almond.
He also strikes me as a thoroughly decent bloke.
However there is something about his music which I just don't get.
I have tried and will persevere in the expectation that someday it will click.
I don't have any of his albums but think if I saw one cheap in a charity shop I would take a punt as I think it's not him, it's me!

  1. Have you given his last album, 'Standing at the Sky's Edge', a go? A considerably rockier effort than some of his others. Hawley made a particularly good appearance on Later around the time of its release, which is worth checking out.

  2. I'm with you CC, there are no RH albums here and I can't see that changing (sorry Swede)

  3. He's good. Haven't purchased all he's ever done but what I do have is fine. Quality melancholia.

  4. I have to agree with Singing Bear, "quality melancholia" especially I'm On Nights does similar things to me as May You Never or Small Hours.

  5. I'm with Swede. 'Leave Your Body Behind You' from Standing At The Sky's Edge is a brilliant track, definitely something different from him. Liking his new single 'Which Way' too. Worth checking out.

  7. I bought 'Coles Corner' named after a well known Sheffield meeting place (think Glasgow Central clock)
And Hawley also provided the soundtrack for a fantastic BBC FOUR film on love as portrayed in old movies.
Used to see him and the other Longpigs in the Vine Inn Cemetery Road Sheffield.
