1989

2021 Charity Shop Purchases 82 - Taylor Swift -1989

The wonderfully named Muir of Ord is the next village to Beauly. Last year we passed through it on a very wet Saturday going from holiday venue 1 to venue 2 and I had a brilliant haul from the Highland Hospice charity shop - Lush, Buffalo Tom,Teenage Fanclub, The Pernice Brothers and the Radar Brothers.

This year sadly was most disappointing. On the first visit I came away with nothing and on the second visit when it was raining again I came away with 1989 the 5th studio album by Taylor Swift from 2014 on Big Machine.
Now I have never knowingly listened to Taylor Swift but through osmosis I suspect that I have probably been exposed to her music. I thought I would spend 50p to see what all the fuss was about.

The verdict? Not really my thing but then again I am not the target audience. I have much worse records on the shelves. I listened to it the whole way through without a desire to turn it off and I may well listen to it again. As things stand it is a keeper.
I'm aware that Ryan Adams did a cover of the album in 2015.Given recent allegations against him I won't be seeking it out any time soon.

Bad Company yesterday, Taylor Swift today. What can I say?

    What about "Must try harder"?

    1. I feel I must defend CC here. While most of us carefully edit out the crap we buy in order to create the false impression that our instincts are impeccable, he is brave enough to give them to us warts and all. And the warts are usually few and far between.

    2. That's enough talk about CC's warts, thank you very much

  2. Don't think I've anything by them!

  4. Right. That's it. I've had enough! My Prog band defence mechanism has kicked in. It had to be a Prog band didn't it, your slur? You could equally have said 'that well known avant garde jazz band Warts and All' or 'that well known hip-hop collective Warts and All' but no you've gone for the cheap and easy hit, the poor old much traduced and maligned Prog band. Just think of the penurious guitar noodling, organ trilling progger simply trying to earn their corn by putting out 13 minute epics thus enabling them to put mere morsels of food on the table for their little wasted starvelings. That's just callous and you should be heartily ashamed of yourself. On the other hand if you were thinking of King Crimson then you might just have a point.

  6. Not her best album, not her worst. I think it's a keeper.

I have to tell you I found a charity shop today with two Clem Snide albums and a Johnny Cash CD I didn't have, so for a second I almost felt like you. It was an Oxfam shop though, so they were overpriced, but I still had to buy them.

    1. Nice one.
I've not come across Clem Snide on my travels
