Spanish Stroll

Spanish Stroll a 1977 single by Mink DeVille popped up on the i-pod over the weekend.

It is pretty much the only thing that I am familiar with by the band although She's So Tough which popped up on a Mojo compilation    NY Punk! suggests that I really should explore further.

Spanish Stroll first came to my attention via That Summer which is quite possibly my favourite compilation album ever. I've just read that the spoken section, which is naturally in Spanish, was delivered not by the frontman Willy DeVille but by bassist Rueben Siguenza. Every day is a school day.

Here also are another two Spanish fronted songs for you . For something more authentic Ernie Goggins should be visiting Spain shortly as part of his excellent The Long Goodbye series

Mink DeVille - Spanish Stroll

The Clash - Spanish Bombs

Aztec Camera - Spanish Horses

  1. I cannot hear Spanish Stroll without being instantly transported back to the hot Summer days of 1977 and walking (strolling?) around in the park with my mates in the school holidays rendering our version of it... we could never quite manage the bit in Spanish.

  2. The Spaniards are trying to reclaim some of these:

Thanks for the plug. We'll have Slovakia later this week, should get to Spain around the end of the month.

  3. Like C said. Spanish Stroll brings me back to my very young days. This song was the sound of our summer. The other songs are also great. Thanks CC

  4. Yep, I learned of this song via That Summer as well. It is the the only act on the soundtrack that I didn't go on to explore in great detail in my 13th year. Not sure why. This is quite a trio you have up today, CC.

  5. I've still got my original Spanish Stroll single, which, unusually for me, is a little the worse for wear - I guess I must've taken it to a few parties back in the day. Thanks for the crisp and clean download.

  6. Like the others have said, Spanish Stroll just takes me back to the summer of '77.

I am having a flashback here as my dad in 1977 took on the task getting our redundant village tennis courts back into a playable condition (he was keen for me to take up sports as opposed to wasting my time listening to music etc) - He and the other dads did well but much to their chagrin we instead ended up hanging around the refurbished pavilion, using it as a youth club, listening to Spanish Stroll. The tennis racquet stayed at home.

  7. Just one of those 10/10 tracks that never seem to date and I too had always assumed that the spoken section was from Willy.
