Disco Friday #8 - Di the Disco Diva

Not Diana Ross! - see comments

In the comments section of last Friday's post Swiss Adam admitted surprising himself in quite liking Chain Reaction by Diana Ross after seeing an old TOTP  clip and felt that a younger version of him would have been less that impressed.
A number 1 in 1986 and a bit of a return to form after a couple of years in the wilderness.
I couldn't find it but took the trouble of sourcing it just for you Adam.

As an added bonus  you are also getting a number 2 and a number 13 from when she was in her disco prime back in 1980 taken from the cheesy compilation section of the shelves.
And, what the hell, I'll throw in the TOTP clip for good measure seeing as how it's Friday

A bit like Adam I never really appreciated these at the time but now find myself singing along.

More disco stompers next Friday

  1. I've always loved I'm Coming Out but I have also always had a problem with Miss Ross and her treatment of Florence Ballard which only recently I have found out may have been exaggerated

    1. A fairly lengthy section in Detroit 67 outlining Flo's version of events

  2. That picture at the top isn't Diana Ross though, right? Or am I losing it?!

    1. Looking at the other Google images from that period I think it is but am happy to be proved wrong

    2. It's a model from an FT article, I think. I say "I think", like I didn't just do a Google image search... :)

    3. Fair do's Martin - thanks for that
I'm now faced with the dilemma of keeping it or replacing it!

    4. I'd keep it but caption it. After all, it very much captures the disco spirit...

    5. You won't find these kind of shenanigans in Saturday Snapshots!

    6. Indeed not. I've had a stern word with the staff

  3. If Chain reaction is something of a guilty pleasure (not that I really buy that as a concept) Upside Down is bona fide aceness.

  4. I've been a big fan of Diana Ross since I was a kid. I discovered the Supremes (through my sister's record collection) at roughly the same time Diana's solo career was going through this 80s revival. I understand that she may not be the nicest person on earth, but she's made some cracking tunes.

If you dig around on the internet, you will find much chuntering about the lyrics to Chain Reaction being filthy, a thinly veiled metaphor for all kinds of extreme sexual activity. Why the Bee Gees would do such a thing in a song written for Diana Ross is beyond me, but it's on the internet so it must be true.
