Some Devotional Music
I'm getting in quick before that surfer of the zeitgeist and the man with his finger on the pulse Scott gets in.
Over the holiday period the Sunday Herald produced an article on the top 50 Scottish albums of 2014.
At number 40 or thereabouts is Break Out by Chris Devotion and the Expectations.
I no longer have the article but from memory there was comparison to an imaginary Top of the Pops from the late 70s featuring Squeeze, Costello and Springsteen and also a reference to The Replacements.
So well worth checking out I'm sure you'll agree and given that it can be picked up ridiculously cheaply it became the first CD in 2015 to pop through my letterbox.
No bells, no whistles and no nods to any passing fads. Just good old fashion rock 'n'roll.
Buy this record.
I think I can get away with posting this track given that it on the sampler available to download for free on the website of Glasgow's very own Armellodie Records

Without a word of a lie CC, my post for tonight was this very album. As you say no bells, no whistles, just a great rock 'n' roll album. I can just picture Chris on TOTP, late '79, also made me think of the soundtrack to Reality Bites. Or maybe that was just an excuse to think of Winona Ryder - cue idea for tonight's replacement post...
ReplyDeleteGlad I brought it forward from Friday then Scott!
DeleteYou should still post and spread the word
btw that's the second time in a few days that you have mentioned Winona (... only saying!)
Amalgamation & Capital made my best albums of 2012 list, but I lost track of the band in recent years. News of the critical acclaim is exciting. Will pick up Break Out for sure. Thanks for the nudge, CC. Scott, this happens to me all of the time. The world really is small. Of course, I don't think another blogger has called it like CC did, such as "I want to get this up to beat Brian..." Ha!
ReplyDeleteScott knows it's nothing personal Brian .......... right, Scott!?!
DeleteJust teasing, CC.
DeleteAs you and Scott say, straight out of 1979, and not a bad thing at that. As Brian says, given a lot of us who read each other's offerings have similar taste we are bound to post the same songs and artists from time to time.
ReplyDeleteThat's it, it's all over CC. Only joking, but you are right there does seem to be a subconscious Winona theme running through this week. I watched Reality Bites the other night, so must have Winona fever all over again...Every home should have a copy of Break Out, wouldn't sound out of place on a mix CD with a bit of Joe Jackson, a bit of The Knack, a bit of Squeeze etc....
ReplyDeleteThink I'll be checking out their previous album before I'm very much older
DeleteI looked up what I had to say about the 2012 album, and I compared them to Any Trouble... which fits in nicely with Scott's mix CD. Always thought Any Trouble sounded a lot like Joe Jackson's early stuff.
DeleteNote to self *check out Any Trouble*
DeleteSorry, CC, getting off topic. Where Are All the Nice Girls? Is the one to have. Stiff Records, 1980. Classic album cover too. One you will find on one of your charity shop excursions, I should think.
DeleteWill keep my eyes peeled - cheers Brian
