Quite Possibly The Best Pop Album of All TIme

A few months ago I started posting what I felt to be the top 10 albums of all time.
I posted five or six and then lost momentum and the series petered out.
However, had it continued The Lexicon of Love the 1992 debut album by ABC would definitely have featured as it is quite possibly the best pop album of all time.
Great songs, coupled with the vocals of Martin Fry, the production of Trevor Horn, the engineering of Gary Langan and the orchestration of Anne Dudley.
There is not a bum note on the album and no second is wasted - a number one album in the UK, critically acclaimed and an absolute classic.

Maybe one day Martin will find true love

ABC - The Look of Love - Part One

ABC - All of My Heart

  1. It is indeed one of The Ten Best Albums Of All Time. I'd forgotten that your Top Ten had stalled

  3. Never could see what people found so good about this album or the band at all. Tried a few times but it did absolutely nothing to me I find it completely soulless. A couple of years ago a mate was raving about the album and so I got it out, cleaned it up and tried again thinking maybe it was just my youthful prejudices but nope I just don't get it.

  4. Definitely one of the very best. When I first heard 'The Look of Love' back in the old days I nearly cried it sounded so good.

  5. I'm with Drew. Never did, and still don't, get what people saw in ABC. It just sounded - and still sounds - like generic 80s chart pop with no soul. But that's probably just me, of course. Oh, and Drew.

  6. Lexicon Of Love is in my Top 5, certainly. Those five can shift around with the ebb and flow of time and LOL has definitely been on top of the list in the past.
FoRW's passionate appraisal of the ABC debut is worth reading over and over.

  7. Well, that's divided opinion although it looks as though Drew and The Robster are in the minority

  8. .........you forgot to add that Drew and The Robster are wrong there!

  9. A fine, polished, pop album. I haven't heard it for many a year, but sang along with your selections, word perfect!

  10. I'm more than happy to be in the minority CC, but George, as I'm always telling the wife, I'm never wrong... ;-)

  12. Don't be harsh on me, but actually my favourite ABC album is the oft-reviled 'How To Be A Zillionaire' one. Cartoonish, but I like its sarcasm a lot. 'The Lexicon..' is good, but somehow I never got to truly love it. And 'Beauty Stab' had better songs..

    1. How To Be A Zillionaire is a brilliant record! Beauty Stab is flawed - flawed, but still a wonderful record.

  13. Bit late to the debate but this was in my "close but no cigar" list when I posted my Top 10 rundown recently. FORW's post sums up better than I could why it is such a great album...Glad you posted All Of My Heart which, for me, is the standout track...
