Talk Talk

The first in an occasional series about internet providers  ....  not

The Very Best of Talk Talk was part of the collection I inherited from my brother in-law and sister in-law
It wasn't one that was consigned to charity right away or immediately found it's way to the shelves. Rather it was in the pending pile awaiting a play before a final decision.
The fact that it has been there for so long tells it's own story.
I've never particularly been a fan finding them a bit OTT and of their time
A couple of reasonable tracks but a listen did nothing to change my mind.Indeed I never made it to the end.

I'm pretty sure it's not a keeper. On the plus side though it is better than Then Jerico

  1. Talk Talk are one of those bands about whom I completely changed my mind in recent years, but for more than musical reasons (just in case you're interested:http://sundriedsparrows.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/on-loving-mark-hollis-and-people-who.html - and watch a great interview!)
I love what Mark Hollis is about... and just hadn't realised it at the time. 'Life's What You Make It' is for me a perfect song, and gives me goosebumps...

  2. I have a Talk Talk album, purchased on its release 30+ years ago. I agree with your sentiments about the band.

  3. Life's What You Make It is one of my all time favourites. There's plenty to enjoy in the rest of their back catalogue. I couldn't even conceive of putting them in the same sentence as then Jerico

  4. Through the years, Talk Talk has come up a few times at my place. My stance is still the same. I like the early more accessible stuff. I have the first three studio albums a live album from 1986 and scores of singles, none of which are newer than 1986. Many in our crowd like the more experimental stuff that came after it. Total respect for Hollis, but I have tried Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock quite a few times only to discover every time that I'm a pop guy that likes the hits better. A nice comp like the one you have today is a keeper in my book. I'm with Adam on Life's What You Make It. Talk Talk's finest moment.

  5. When I saw the post title in my side-bar, CC,I was expecting Music Machine's 'Talk Talk.' ;-) 'Life's What You Make It' is a good pop song with the characteristic sound/mood of its' time.

  6. The musos all love Spirit of Eden. Many people whose opinions I respect tell me it's one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

Don't get it myself, but each to their own.

  7. I totally enjoy drinking the Talk Talk Kool-Aid...from early big synth sound, groomed to be EMI's next Duran Duran through their transformation to more intimate and intellectual pop and finally into their truly post rock final two albums, Talk Talk have always pleased and surprised me. The real beauty of Talk Talk is that they really did make music for their pleasure as well as our own. Their path too nothing from record companies into account, yet they never lost the interest of those behemoths until they were ready to call it a day. Mark Hollis's solo album is a beautiful piece of music as well and recommended to anyone who gained something from Talk Talk's later recordings.
