The Watermelon Sampler

The Watermelon Sampler Volume 1 is not necessarily an Americana compilation per se. Rather it is a 1995 collection of songs from Austin's Watermelon Records. Given that Austin is the spiritual home of Americana and many of the artists involved it merits its inclusion in this series.

Alejandro Escovedo will be no stranger to any long suffering reading of this Blog. In 1998 the Americana magazine No Depression named him as the Artist of the Decade and there are no arguments from this quarter with that accolade. Here he is with Five Hearts Breaking from his 1992 album Gravity.

Tish Hinojosa, you could argue, is the female equivalent of Alejandro. Manos, Huesos y Sangre which translates as Hands, Bones and Blood comes from her album Aquella Noche  - That Certain Night.

The Silos who have been active from 1985 are led by singer Walter Salas- Humara yet another artist from Mexican stock. Miles Away is the lead track from their album Hasta La Victorial.
