It's All Greek to Me

Last night Scotland played Greece in the first leg of the Nations League play offs.

I wrote this before the game kicked off so I may come back with something in the comments section to highlight our glorious victory or the fact that we were robbed. Probably the latter.

There are only three Greek artists in the Music Folder and no I'm sorry to disappoint you but they are  not  Vangelis, Demis Roussos and Nana Mouskouri . I was tempted to include Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou  aka  George Michael but he was born in East Finchley.

Tango With Lions is a Greek-German band project led by singer-songwriter and singer Katerina Papachristou. They have released a number of records on the Inner Ear label which are available on Bandcamp.

I have a copy of their 2018 album The Light which is well worth a listen.

Yuri's Accident are a band from Athens founded in 2010 - further details here . I have a couple of tracks by them with one included below.

Finally I give you My Drunken Haze which probably describes your average Scotland fan who was at the game. Discogs   describe them ( the band, not the Scottish fans) as a Greek pop band born in spring 2010 in Athens. 60's, cinematic, psych and dream pop is their main sound origin.

I hope the result went in our favour.

  1. A 1-0 win
We were good in the first half but totally overrun in the second
Somehow we managed to hold on though!

    1. Thanks. I have just checked and I have an album of theirs. They are, of course, no Nana Mouskouri

  3. We got an absolute doing in the second-half last night. No idea how we held on. I fear the worst for Sunday's return leg...we can't be so lucky two games in a row.

  4. A very lucky win but not going to quibble.

A lot of fans who were flying back to Heathrow are stuck today or having to pay extortionate prices for flights elsewhere.

Wot, no Nana! We call the BBC Scotland News weather lady Nana as she looks just like her. Real name Judith.

    1. "Wot, no Nana" Unfortunately, Alyson, we cannot expect music of such high calibre on these pages.........

    4. I can see the resemblance between Judith Ralston (Anthony's brother?) and Nana now you mention it.
Watching the weather will never be the same!

  5. I'm more for the traditional Greek bazouki music myself - that stuff that got on John Cleese's nerves. Never On Sunday (Melina Mercouri's version of course) is pure gold. Sunday is the second leg right? You never know.
