Northern Soul Sunday

2024 Charity Shop Purchases # 65  - Various Artists - Northern Soul Vol 2. - 20 Original Classics - Keeps on Burnin'

He's back!

It would appear that Castle Douglas is the Northern Soul capital of Dumfriesshire. The evidence? Half a dozen or so Norther Soul compilations in one of charity shops.

I was going to say cheap and cheerful but they were going for £1.50 per pop. I opted for two of  them.

Northern Soul Vol 2. - 20 Original Classics - Keeps on Burnin' is from 2012 on the Spectrum label which specialises in such things.

As the can see from the track list they appear to be playing fast and loose with the definition of Northern Soul - The Supremes, Ray Charles, The Temptations and Dusty Springfield is perhaps stretching the genre a little bit.

You will be glad to know that I have opted for three of the lesser known artists

Nolan Porter - If I Could Only Be Sure

Yvonne Baker - You Didn't Say a Word

Bobby Hutton - Lend a Hand

  4. Three great tunes well picked out from some more questionable stuff I'm sure. I am increasingly obsessed with Northern Soul, it is a fascinating "scene". I was very much aware of the scene back in the day and was old enough to go to All Nighters in the its heyday and even had a good one close to me (Yate), but I never went. The scene does seem to increasingly commandeer songs and label them as Northern Soul nowadays, but that is just lazy journalism and programming a lot of the time I think. Nolan Porter is not classic NS (beyond it being rare) but has always been a staple I think. If I had bought more records off lists I was getting at the time when many of the records were still unknown I would be sitting on a very valuable collection now, but my first pay packets didn't stretch too far and I would have been buying blind; and I liked Reggae, Punk, Disco, and Jazz funk too!
