2026 Charity Shop Purchases #1 - Hefner -Dead Media
Today the Blog returns to its raison d'etre with the first Charity Shop purchase of 2026.
Like many folk,I suspect, I first became familiar with Peel favourites the band Hefner following the release of their song The Day That Thatcher Dies. This led to me purchasing their 2000 third album We Love The City on the Too Pure label.
Thereafter they quickly slipped of my radar until I stumbled across Dead Media their fourth and final album from 2001 and also on Too Pure.
As with We Love The City it is a bit quirky but also catchy. It was reasonably well received by the critics scoring 59/100 on the Metacritic Aggregate. It was less successful on the commercial side with the album peaking at # 178
Main man Darren Hayman has stubbornly hung on over the years with a series of spin offs and solo projects. He recently popped up playing along with Carla J Easton.

A band I knew of but don’t think I ever heard before today. They were active during a period when I just wasn’t listening to much new music at all. Gotta say, I’m liking this. - Brian
ReplyDeleteBig fan of Darren, he's put out a load of stuff since his Hefner days - both solo and with others - some of it of variable quality I must say but I admire his multi-media creativity (not to mention stamina too) and there have been many gems along the way.
