Complete Surrender

It was Drew, formerly of this parish, who first introduced me to the music of Slow Club.

It has been a while since I have given them a listen. A post by Drew on Bluesky recently about their third album 2014's Complete Surrender had me reaching for the shelves to give it a dust down and a listen. It was worth the wait.

For those unaware of the band they were a duo from Sheffield active between 2006 and 2017 releasing 5 albums during that period.

The band members were Charles Watson and Rebecca Lucy Taylor. If you recognise the latter name that is probably because she has gone on to greater things under the nom de plum Self Esteem. Charles Watson has been less successful despite having released three solo albums to date.

Slow Club - Tears Of Joy

Slow Club - Suffering You, Suffering Me

Slow Club - Paraguay and Panama

  1. I saw them live at the Tramlines festival in Sheffield in 2015. Photo evidence: https://flic.kr/p/vzDb6k

Enjoyed their performance but not enough to get round to buying any of their stuff. My mistake it seems.

Had not made the connection with Self Esteem,

  2. A good band, much missed. I'm glad Rebecca went on to more success. Shame her other half found it harder.

  3. I think just about all of us bought this album after Drew’s glowing post. I know I did. I’ll dust this one off too. Been a while… - Brian
