I miss the Record Library.
In the days before Spotify and other streaming services you could pay 50p or so for a loan of a physical copy of an album to give it the once over. If you liked it you could make a copy - remembering home recording is illegal and killing music. It was a good way to explore artists that you were unfamiliar with and therefore a bit wary of forking out for an album on the off chance you might like it.
In 2012 - I know, because I looked it up, it seems that I went through a period of exploring what was described as Nu Soul
I took out the albums by two British artists Devotion by Jessie Ware and From the Roots Up by Delilah and enjoyed them well enough to burn them on CDs.
However this dalliance did not last long and they gathered dust on the shelves. I'm fairly confident that neither got a listen in the last 10 years.
Space, as always, is at a premium particularly on the Soul shelves and I took the decision to replace the CDs with digital copies. Before disposing of the Burns I gave both a listen. Both had some good points, particularly Jessie Ware, but not enough for me to regret the downgrade of storage.
See what you think
Your lack of sentimentality is positively chilling.
ReplyDeleteTough love
DeleteJessie Ware (and in particular 'What's Your Pleasure') was cited by Girl Ray on their last (disco influenced) album, Prestige.
ReplyDeleteAh, space - the nemesis of any serious collector: books, vinyl; CDs - they all take up room a.k.a. space. Probably why I'm so fond of the Cloud. (Though I will deny ever having said that.)

I used to love visiting the record library. I got very excited when they started selling off a bunch of their CDs for 50p each... until I realised it was the beginning of the end...
