Bloodshot Records Sampler 2002

Back in 2002 I was pretty much obsessed by all things  Americana and by Chicago's Bloodshot Records in particular.. They were my equivalent of Postcard or Factory.

It was therefore a no brainer that I ordered their 2002 Sampler. Postage from the US was affordable back then

I've got 11 of the 21 albums featured and  have tracks by most if not all of the others artists. I even bought the compilation The Bottle Let Me Down which is a collection of childrens songs!

A good few of the acts featured in one of my first series' Bloodshot Tuesday way back in 2013

I could have chosen any of the tracks but I've gone for those by  Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys, Trailer Bride  and Kelly Hogan.

I have further Samplers from 2015 to 2018 which may well feature in this series in due course

Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys - Gotta Get Back to Forgetting You

Trailerbride - Jesco

Kelly Hogan - Strayed

Saturday Shuffle 133

Get your walking boots on as we are going to do some rambling this week and who better to kick us off than non other than The Allman Brothers with Ramblin' Man.

It may well be a long ramble if they manage to get South of Cincinnati where they may well touch base with Dwight Yoakam.

Thereafter things may go slightly askew if they bump into The The who sadly  have to report that Armageddon Days are Here (Again).

If we survive the Armageddon we willl brush off our boots and reassemble here next Saturday for SS134.

Blog Country 134 - Mozambique

Last time round we visited Ghana in the north west of Africa. This time we are in the south east and the country of Mozambique which looks out to the Indian Ocean

The flag was adopted in 1983 and the yellow star and the emblem of a book, hoe and an AK-47 rifle symbolizes the country's struggle for independence, natural wealth  and dedication to education and defense.

As we are still in Africa I am contractually obliged to Ernie's place where you will find many excellent posts referencing the music of Mozambique.

First up this time are the band Djaaka who were founded in the city of Beira in the early 2000's with the song Tchemerani

Next up is Fany Mpfumo who was considered to be one of the founders of the marrabenta music scene which combines traditional Mozambican dance rhythms with Portuguese folk music. Fany sadly died in 1987 aged 59. Here he is with Awupelanga.

Fany is followed by Luísa Zélia Sebastiana da Graça Madade.Fortunately she goes by the stage name  Liloca and her song today is Mabetele.

For some reason I appear to have downloaded two songs by Lisbo Matavel, the Grand Old man  of marrabenta. I've gone for the one with the shortest title namely Sati Wamina.

We conclude with the band Mabulu. Mabulu, as I'm sure you know,  means looking for a dialogue  in the Shangana language  - a reference to the fact that the group comprises members from different generations. Today's offering is Maldeyeni

We will remain on the African continent for our next Blog Country

Djaaka - Tchemerani

Fany Mpfumo -Awupelanga

Liloca - Mabetele

Lisbo Matavel - Sate Wamina

News of the World - 4

The Times is one of the oldest and most famous Uk newspapers. It began in 1775 as The Daily Universal before changing it's name in 1788. It is generally considered as a centre right and conservative paper but not as far right as the likes of the Telegraph, Mail or Express

Having said that it is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News UK so definitely not left leaning. I'm not sure whether Bob Dylan would be a fan although he has acknowledged that The Times They Are A' Changing

The New York Times is perceived as a liberal paper. It  endorsed Kamila Harris in 2024.  It is disliked by Trump who calls it the Failing New York Times. Simone Felice reads it all baby in the New York Times.

For the news but not newspaper related songs David Francey is still digesting Yesterday's News. Aimee Mann sadly is experiencing some Real Bad News

Will next week's news be good or bad?

Winter Olympics Songs

I believe that the Winter Olympics are upon us once again.

Apparently it is in Italy which is somewhere you don't automatically think of for winter sports until you remember the Alps.

I must admit it is something that I take very little interest with the exception of the curling .

It got me thinking as to songs or artists who could however loosely be linked to the events on off .

Let's start with skiing and I have found two ski related songs.First up are Memphis with Apre ski . Laura Pallas on the other hand prefers Skiing in the Snow.

Skating also proved to be pretty tricky. No Skater Boy be Avril Lavigne but rather Skater of the Surface by Karine Polwart.

Cinerama are fond of a Sly Curl

Ice Hockey is one of the more popular Winter Olympic Sports so here are Super Furry Animals with Ice Hockey Hair.

I was a bit surprised/disappointed that I couldn't come up with a Sledge related song. By way of compensation I give you Percy Sledge with the appropriately named Sudden Stop.

Over to you. I'm sure you will come up with some that I have missed.

Memphis -Apres Ski

The Clarkston Americana Haul - Scott Miller & the Commonwealth

2026 Charity Shop Purchases #7 - Scott Miller & the Commonwealth - Citation

That's us now 2/3rds of the way through the Clarkston Americana Haul. Scott Miller & the Commonwealth are the only one of the six acts that I didn't previously have an album by although I have the occasional track by them here or there.

Citation was released in 2006 on the Sugar Hill label. Amazingly it was still in its polythene wrapping some 20 years after its initial release.

Scott was previously a member of the V-Roys who were on Steve Earle's E-Squared label.. This is the 3rd of 4 albums released on Sugar Hill. He had a  number of later solo albums on the self released F.A.Y. label and a collaboartive album with Rayna Gilbert in 2012. Nothing in the last 10 years so it doesn't look like he's still on the go.

Citation is produced by the legendary Jim Dickinson who has appeared here a couple of times before.

All Music give the album 3.5 with comparisons to Ryan Adams and Steve Earle's younger brother which I could go along with. Well worth 50p.

Two more to go.

I-Pod Playlist - State of the Union

This week's I-pod Playlist is State of the Union and let's face it  it is in a right old state.

The idea is to feature songs including the name of one of the 50 states of the USA.

In 2019 George gave us a great series featuring posts on all 50 states. It's well worth hitting the search button and giving them a read.

Only three states today I'm afraid taken pretty much at random.

We kick of with Lissie and Oh Mississippi the final track on her great 2010 debut album Catching a Tiger.

Lissie is followed with Twa Toots with Please Don't Play a Rainy Night in Georgia taken from a Peel Sessions recording from 1986.

We conclude with the late great Joe Strummer and Tennessee Man from the 1987 album Walker.

Next time round it is Namechecked i.e. artists or bands named in the titles of other artists songs.

Lissie - Oh Mississippi

Two Toots - Please Don't Play A Rainy Night In Georgia

Joe Strummer - Tennesse Rain

NB

Yesterday Blogger quite correctly flagged up a warning concerning the title of a Tommy Womack song on the compilation which I referenced but never featured. It was clearly a no brainer for Rol's Cancel Culture series.

I tried to edit the post but the warning remains in place.

Saturday Shuffle 132

I was looking at previous Shuffles during the week and a noticed a few things.

There are two numbers 23,43,53 and 54, no 32 and one with no number. Therefore this is, I think, actually SS138. I don't have the time of inclination to go back and correct the mistakes. Also it is a good while this there was an error so I appear to have become more dilgent (for the time being) .

Three songs this week which I don't think have appeared in this series before. Given the above, please don't quote me on that!

First up are The Frank and Walters surely the finest band ever to have come out of Cork. Here is probably their best known song Fashion Crisis Hits New York.

There are a couple of live albums by Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band on the MP3 player. This version of The Promised Land was recorded live in Passiac, New Jersey on 19th September, 1978.

We conclude with Steve Wynn who I recently saw live as lead of The Dream Syndicate. Here he is with Amphetamine  from the 2003 album Static Transmission by Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3.

SS 133 next Saturday ( or if you prefer SS 139!)

Blog Country 133 - Ghana

If you have a couple of days to spare and are looking for something to do you could do worse than to pop over to Ernie's place and type Ghana into the search function. The songs will keep you busy for days.

I usually try to avoid stepping on Ernie's toes when it comes to African countries but I had neither the time nor the inclination to check whether any of these artists featured there feature here.I suspect some may have but it will do no harm to hear more from them.

I discovered that Ed Sheeran has the Ghanaian flag tattooed on his wrist. That very nearly stopped me going any further.

In no particular order lets kick off with  Wendy Shay who in March 2021 was among the top 30 Most  Influential Women in Music according to the Ghanaian 3Music Awards. Here she is with Too Late.

Next up is Amakye Dede a high life musician i.e music characterised by melodic brass instruments, multiple guitars and rhythmic percussion. Here he is joined by Apollo Kings International with the song Asem to Mea Kabi Mame.

Ben Brako is another high life musician who rose to prominence in the mid to late 80s. His song today is Moko Mekrom.

We've managed to make some room for Paapa Yankson & the Christian Singers with Gye Me Oo.

Last, but not least,we conclude with some royalty courtesy of King Ayisoba a traditional musician known for his unique style of music alongside the kologo a traditional 2- stringed lute from Northern Ghana. The song is I Want to See You My Father

Apologies for the delay in this one. The enormity of the artists available had me avoiding diving in for too long.

Next time round it will be yet another African country.

News of the World - 3

This week's headliner The S*n makes last week's News of the World rag look like a Parish newsletter.

It is every bit as salacious as the NoW but managed to sink to even lower depths  when it "reported " on the Hillsborough Disaster of 15th April 1989 when 97 Liverpool fans ( a further fan died after the above picture) were crushed to death at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium in a FA Cup semi-final  against Nottingham Forest

The South Yorkshire Police were also complicit in spreading such untruths and were widely criticised in The Taylor Report (see link above)

I remember that we were in a pub in Glasgow's West End when the news first came on the TV. My pal Pete, who stayed in Sheffield at the time, was rightly worried as he had friends attending the game. Thankfully they emerged unscathed.

The S*n was rightly boycotted by the majority of the citizens of Liverpool and to this day many newsagents there won't stock it. Never Buy the S*n as Billy Bragg rightly sings.

Today's second  tabloid paper is the Daily Star which  has run from 1978 as a S*n impersonator. Probably not what Belly had in mind when they released this single .

This weeks two news related songs as opposed to newspaper related are Turn on the News by Hüsker Dü  and News at Ten by The Vapors.

Look out for your paper boy/girl next Thursday

The Clarkston Americana Haul - Marah

2026 Charity Shop Purchases #6 - Marah - If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry

From 2005 and on the Munich label in Europe and Yep Roc in the US  If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry is 7th album by the band Marah.

It joins their second album Kids in Philly on the blue Americana shelves. Kids was an album I bought with some of my winnings from the Grand National sweepstake at work back in 2018

Like the Deadstring Brothers they can only loosely be defined as Americana, but where else would they go? Stephen King ( yes him!) describes them as probably the best band in America that nobody knows. He then slightly ruins it by calling then the American U2.

I don't see that myself. If I did it would be going straight back.

My instinct is that it is a keeper but that it will also be a grower. Feel free to quote me on that Mr King.

Probably worth 50p

Marah - The Dishwasher's Dream

Marah - Poor People

That takes my Americana total up to 666!

The Dream Syndicate at Glasgow Art School

Saturday night saw me at the Glasgow Art School to see The Dream Syndicate. It was my first gig of the year and my  first visit to the venue for about 40 years when I saw the likes of Carmel and the Bhundu Boys play.

It was a gig of two halves - the first half featuring songs from their recent albums since reforming  in 2012 and the second half primarily concentrating on songs from their second album 1984's Medicine Show

The band consisted of Steve Wynn (guitar and vocals), Jason Victor (guitar), Mark Walton (bass), Linda Pittman (drums) and Chris Cacavas (Keyboards)

When I saw them at the Hug and Pint back in 2023 Vicki Patterson of Bangles fame was replacing Jason. Whilst she did a sterling job it was great to see Jason back on stage.I think that he is probably the greatest guitarist that I've ever seen.

Whereas the first half was excellent they upped the anti somewhat  in the second half with, in particular, brilliant versions of The Medicine Show, John Coltrane Stereo Blues ( a particular favourite of Drew ) and Merrittville. Spine tingling stuff.

It was my first gig of the year and it will take something  really special for it  not  to be my top gig of the year.

For feedback from their recent gigs it Italy can I refer you to Mike from Manic Pop Thrills

To top off an excellent evening I only had to wait ten minutes for my bus.

i-Pod Playlist - Soul 2 Soul

No not the Club Classics from Soul II Soul I'm afraid but rather some old time Soul classics from the 93 songs on the Soul 2 Soul playlist on the I-Pod. Ones that will pass the sands of time more than the Club bangers .

Is it proof you are wanting?

Look no further than Bettye Swann who is happy to Tell It Like It Is.

Sam Cook weighs in with A Change is Gonna Come,.First released in 1964 it is synonymous with the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. It is rightly preserved in the Library of Congress having been deemed culturally, historically or asthetically significant. It easily ticks all three boxes.

Isaac Hayes' song Shaft is certainly significant culturally as it was the theme song for the 1971 blacksploitation crime action film of the same name with Richard Roundtree playing the lead role of John Shaft.

Finally Gladys Knight & the Pips have had enough of California and are leaving on The Midnight Train to Georgia

Glorious stuff.

It's the State of the Union next and by god it is in a right old state at the moment.

New Music From New West

New West is a record label formed in 2008. It originally had offices in Los Angeles and Austin but is now based out of  Nashville and Athens, Georgia.

It has a large repertoire  of artists the majority of which could be would probably fit the various descriptions of Americana.

This is certainly the case for the compilation New Music From New West released in 2005. I reckon that only Alice Cooper and Nic Armstrong & the Thieves would not easily fit under the umbrella with all the others squashed inside.

Plenty to choose from then. I've gone for Drive-By Truckers, Chuck Prophet and (Billy Joe) Shaver all three of whom I have seen live in Glasgow.

Sadly Billy Jo did not live forever. He passed away in October 2012 at the age of 81

Saturday Shuffle 131

We move swiftly on from last week's abberation with three acts who I am pretty confident would have very little time for the Orange Idiot.

Let's head back to 2002 and Golden Age of Radio the debut album from Josh Ritter and in particular track 2. Me and Jiggs is a song about small town America and as a bonus it name checks Townes Van Zandt.

We go from a track off a debut album to one off a second album all the way back to 1980. Here are The B-52's with the wonderful Private Idaho

We conclude with the most modern of the three from 2005. From 2005 and the album The Great Destroyer here are Low with the classic song California

Tune in next Saturday for some more random classic and not so classics.

The Clarkston Americana Haul - Deadstring Brothers

2026 Charity Shop Purchases #5 - Deadstring Brothers -  São Paulo

The second album in the haul is São Paulo the fourth album by the Deadstring Brothers from 2009 and on the mighty Bloodshot label.

It joins Deadstring Brothers (2003) and Starving Winter Report (2005) on the blue Americana shelves.

There may well be an argument that says it is not particularly Americana and those saying that may well be correct. But hey it is on Bloodshot  so it couldn't really go anywhere else.

If I had a section for Rolling Stones Impersonations it may well have found its way  there . Penny Black Music call it correct when they describe it as a fine mixture of  country rock, blues and straight ahead rock. It's hard to disagree with that.

The title and opening track I think together with Adalee.

Another 50p well spent.

News of The World - 2

We follow last Week's News of the World with the Tory Housewives and the Blue Rinse Brigade favourite the Daily Express.

As you can see from the above they are not afraid to nail their colours to the mast. However, unlike last week's rag they don't really go for smut. John Cooper Clarke sums their stance neatly with his song (You Never See a Nipple in the ) Daily Express

It's also highly unlikely that you will ever see a nipple in the couthy Sunday Post published by DC Thompson in Dundee  which for some reason is very popular in Scotland. Maybe it is something to do with Our Wullie and The Broons. The accompanying song is Post to Wire by Richmond Fontaine.

For news in general this weeks offerings are Gillian Welch with Here Comes the News and Have You Heard the News Today by Cosmic Rough Riders

The King of America

Sly Dunbar R.I.P.

It was sad to read the news of the death of  the legendary Reggae drummer Sly Dunbar at the age  of just 73.

Along with the late bassist Robbie Shakespeare the Riddim Twins were undoubtedly the greatest Rhythm Section in Reggae and indeed one of the all time greats in any musical genre

Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg, Ian Dury, Mick Jagger - you name them, Sly and Robbie enhanced their music.

As the Tom Tom Club sang Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie .

Sadly no more. Rest easy Sly.

Dead Man Walking

As part of the music to accompany the Sunday morning papers Mrs CC selected the above  CD.

The blurb on the top line reads Music from and inspired by the motion picture Dead Man Walking

From 1995 the film starred Susan Sarandon as a num who is the spiritual advise to Sean Pean who plays a convicted murderer and who is awaiting execution.

I saw it at the pictures when it came out and if I recall it was reasonably good and moving film.

Wiki describe the CD as a soundtrack but only four featured in the actual film. The others reflect the same thems of incarceration and execution. Maybe a bit heavy for a Sunday morning  but it includes some terrific songs.

I'm going for Johnny Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Steve Earle but there are enough good songs to justify a further post in due course

Steve Earle - Ellis Unit One

i-Pod Playlist - Train a' Comin'

A playlist with 105 train related songs and although he inspired the title Steve Earle does not appear with Train A' Comin'. Sorry

Still there is plenty to choose from. Four songs for you this week and I'll give you them in the order I downloaded them.

We kick of with Louis Jordan with the classic Choo Choo Ch' Boogie.

Next up it is a song  written by the genius that is Nigel Blackwell. Here are the mighty Half Man Half Biscuit with The Light at the End of the Tunnel.

Next we have one which actually includes the word Train. Yes, you guessed it, it is the Pete Best Beatles with  the Alamein Train.

We conclude with The O'Jays and the wonderful Love Train. All aboard..

Next time round we have some Soul 2 Soul

The New Frontier

This Sunday's Americana compilation The New Frontier ; Americana - The Next Generation comes courtesy of Uncut Magazine June 2007

Slightly after Americana peaked for me but still enough for me to have some familiarity with 6 of the 15 acts.

One of the new to me acts were Oakley Hall with If I Was in Elderado. From Brooklyn, New York and active from 2002 to date.Wiki describes them as a folk rock group with elements of rock, blue grass and old time music. They are worthy of further exploration.

The band Bright Eyes, led by Conor Oberst, are no strangers to me and I have a good few of there albums primarily from charity shops. Lau which is a gorgeous song, is taken from the Saddle Creek  album I'm Wide Awake , It's Morning which I have on the Americana shelves.Conor has gona bit of the rails in recent years. I hope he's ok.

I am slightly familiar with The Felice Brothers with a burn of 2014's Favorite Waitress (marks off for spelling!) Their song Mercy on the CD  is taken from their 2007 album Mercy on Loose Records

On the off chance that anyone is remotely interested here is the tracklist

Saturday Shuffle 130

Even the random Shuffle knows an American Idiot when they hear one

Green Day first released American Idiot in 2004. Let's face it Trump was an idiot event then but he has progressed from the Village Idiot to the World Idiot. He should get a prize for that

Although Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) is from earlier times it is still relevant today, ICE would probably shoot it down. Here the classic song by Woody Guthrie is covered by Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

Without the immigrants there would probably be no-one Working in a Coalmine. Here Lee Dorsey does the heavy shovelling.

The Shuffle will be back next Saturday if we are spared.

The Clarkston Americana Haul - Peter Bruntnell

2026 Charity Shop Purchases #4  - Peter Bruntnell - Ends of The Earth

A recent visit to Cancer Research at Clarkston Toll saw me coming away with six Americana CDs for three quid. I shall feature them in alphabetical order.

First up is Peter Bruntnell with Ends of the Earth on the Back Porch label from 2002.

I saw him play a good few times around then but strangely this is the first of his albums that I have ever owned although I have a burn of  Normal For Bridgwater  ( 1999)  and  a download of King of Madrid (2019) courtesy of George.

Although it is a belter I have decided against posting Here Come The Swells as it has appeared here three times already.

There were plenty of others to choose from and I've gone for City Star and Rio Tinto.

50p well spent.

News of the World

Read all about it ....

New series alert covering Newspapers and associated News songs.

I use the term newspaper lightly when refering to the Murdoch rag News of the World  which closed in 2011 following a phone hacking scandal which led to a public backlash and withdrawal of advertising.

No great loss as I'm sure you will all agree.

Where possible for the next 8 weeks I will attempt to include a couple of songs which can be linked with newspaper titles and a couple about news in general

It makes sense therefore to start this series with The Jam and their song News of the World..

Slighty more obscure I give you Martha and the Muffins with Echo Beach. It is unlikely that you could pick up the Liverpool Echo there.

For news in general this weeks offerings are Ten Second News by Son Volt and Bad News Blues by Lucinda Williams.

Make sure that you contact your local newsagent to ensure that the news is delivered next Thursday

Lee Perry - Reggae Genius

2026 Charity Shop Purchases #3 Lee Perry - Reggae Genius 20 Upsetter Classics

Let's start with a question and an observation.

Question - who in their right mind would hand an album such as this into a charity shop?

Observation - the term genius is often overused and unmerited. In this case it is fully justifiable.

From 2011 it is probably the best album ever to have been released on the Spectrum label. I mean to say just look at this tracklist. 20 songs and not a dud among them

I could have chosen any of these songs produced by Scratch most of which were written or co-written by him.

Susan Cadogan is the only female artist to feature on the album so it seems only fair to give you her classic song Hurts So Good.

Susan is followed by the man himself with Roast Fish & Cornbread.

My final selection is Max Romeo with I Chase The Devil.

I suspect that this is one which will be  revisited in due course.

The Countess of Fife

Think of  The Cramps meeting Johnny Cash , in an unholy alchemy of country, punk and gospel...

Then throw The Rezillos into the mix as The Countess of Fife is none other than the legend that is Fay Fife. Star of the Sea released in November 2022 by Last Night From Glasgow was her debut album . It is available here

It is one that I didn't pick up on at the time but I've recently given it a listen and thoroughly enjoyed it. She has also released a CD EP Betwix and Between which I have yet to hear.

She has a second album New Phone * New Car* New Man*  scheduled which will be released by LNFG on the 1st of May. A new album by The Rezillos is also scheduled

i - Pod Playlists - Weekly.Monthly, Yearly

On the 2nd of January, when the world was still slumbering, I posted iPod Playlists - Stormy Weather and announced a new series. I them completely forgot all about it.

It seems that there are a further 16 themed playlists to go so here is the second one on my list Weekly,Monthly,Yearly again with the caveat that if  I can't find the songs from the iPod in my music folder I'll choose something else.

The weekly one proved relatively easy . The playlist on the i-Pod included two versions of Seven Days Too Long namely the cover by Dexys Midnight Runners and the original by Chuck Woods. I've gone for Chuck.

The only January song on the i-Pod playlist was January Hymn by The Decemberists. Unfortunately it is not in my Music file so here is January Man by Roy Harper

For the Yearly offering I have gone for The Winter of  '79 by the Tom Robinson Band.

From my list the next playlist, if I remember, is Train a' Comin' which should be relatively straightforward.

Roy Harper - January Man

HMV's Alternative Country Collection

This week's Americana comp comes courtesy of HMV with the inspired title HMV's Alternative Country Collection .

From 1997 and on the Round Tower label it seems to have only sold once on Discogs for £1.95. it is rated (presumably by the person who bought it) as 1/5.

This is perhaps a bit harsh given that it has Tarmac by Hazledine on it. That alone takes it to at least 2.5/5.

It must be said that the rest are not particularly special. I pride myself with knowing my stuff when it comes to Americana/Alternative Country but I probably only know about 4 or 5 of the 14 acts.

That it itself is no bad thing as it is always good to here some new acts. However, most of them will not live long in my memory.

Here are Hazeldine and two others.

Hazeldine - Tarmac.

Kieran Kane - Cool Me Down

Katie Moffat - Ain't I a Woman

On my post yesterday I referenced a song on the featured album which had a very dodgy title and suggested it wouldn't pass Rol's Cancel Culture Criteria

Saturday Shuffle 129

Let's kick things off this week with our coverstars 80's indie band The Flatmates  and their song I Could be in Heaven which was their first single to chart in the UK Indie Charts peaking at number 18 in October 1996.

It's surely a short hop from Heaven to Colorado especially when it is sung by Catherine Craig. I won't bore you with the story of her singing this to me and my pals as I've already done this on a couple of occasions before here and here

The third song thrown up by the Shuffle was Soul Clap '69 by Booker T and the MGs. Unfortunately I could not find it in the Music folder so you will have to make do with a video clip.

Fortunately XTC came off the bench to give us This is Pop.

More Pop or otherwise next Saturday

Friends Again

Friends Again were one of the legendary Glasgow bands of the 80's. However, they managed to pass me by entirely probably because I  was living and working in Campbeltown at the time which was hardly Hipster Central.

The band lineup was essentially James Grant, Chris Thomson and Paul McGeechan. I was familiar with James Grant from his later work with Love and Money and subsequently Butler, Blake and Grant. I also saw him play once at a house party.

It took me far longer to become familiar with Chris Thomson. Having read about him and the Bathers I picked up Kelvingrove Baby and subsequently Sirenesque when they were championed by Last Night From Glasgow. I saw them perform a terrific concert at Glasgow GUU.

I am less familiar with Paul McGeechan but know that he masters many of the LNFG albums and has released music as Starless

There was an article in last Saturday's Glasgow Herald about the band who are re-uniting to play a concert at the Old Fruitmarket as part of Celtic Connections.

That gave me  the incentive to dust down the Past Night From Glasgow reissue of their album Trapped and Unwrapped for a long overdue listen.

Magnetic

It's amazing how you find things you never knew you had when you start rooting around the dark recesses of your Music folder.

The Magnetic Fields featured yesterday but when searching under the word Magnetic a few tracks from an album called Magnetic by Nashville singer songwriter also Rachel Taylor popped up.

From May 2015 her  soaring vocal style with hints of country and western giving way to an edgier alternative rock theme is a slight departure from the more simplistic stylings of her EP, “Heartbreak is for Everyone” (Bandcamp)

I'm not sure that I am hearing much country and western but it is a pleasant listen albeit maybe not enough to elevate her from the pack. Here is the title track from the album and a track from the EP.

Triplets

I have been enjoying listening to Twilight Override the current triple album by Jeff Tweedy. I was put of going to see him in concert recently given the price of the tickets and assumed that it would be a similar tale  buying the vinyl version.

Imagine my surprise when it popped up on the HMV On Line site at a pretty reasonable price and I duly pounced... This was doubly surprising given I was in an HMV shop of Saturday where the prices were quite franky ridiculous.

It got me thinking of other triple albums I have (excluding CD compilations). I think there are four:

Sandinista by The Clash on CD

69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields on CD

A battered copy of All Things Must Pass by George Harrison courtesy on Val's Vinyl

And a live album by the Dutch band NITS called urk  here. I've no idea how this one came into my possession and I'm not sure that I've ever played it

Blog Country 132 - Cape Verde

Not content with qualifying for the World Cup the good people of Cape Verde have something else to celebrate as they become the 132nd Country to visit CCM since I started recording my visitors.

As always when it is an African country, as it is more often than not these days, I have tried to avoid treading on Ernie's toes from when he gave us his Odyssey. I think I have managed to come up with five different artists but probably not of the same quality.

Let's start with Fantcha who sings in the traditional Morna style. Google describes Morna as a soulful melancholic mUsic and dance genre from Cape Verde recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, blending African rhythms with Portuguese melodies, often featuring instruments like guitar, violin, and cavaquinho to express themes of love, loss, and longing for home. Her song today is Sol Ja Camba.

Next up is Finaçon a band who were active in the 80s and 90s and who often performed in the accordian based Funaná genre. Here they give us Kem Ki Bem, Ki Ta Bai

Lura is a Portuguese singer and musician of Cape Verdean descent whose compositions are based on traditional Cape Verdan music. There is maybe an argument that she doesn't therefore "count" but I can't be bothered replacing her. Here she sings  Sábi di Más which George will tell you translates as Have a Great Time.

Tcheka is a Cape Verdean singer, songwriter and guitarist, who is well known for his work in transposing the traditional genre batuque  to the electro-acoustic guitar. But you probably knew that already. Here he performs Djuana

Last, but by no means least, we have  Teófilo Chantre who was most active in the 1980s Here he sings Tu Verrais whch even I can work out means You See.

Yet another African country next but a much bigger one which hopefully will give us plenty of choices to share.

Tate & Lyle

I spent a very pleasant 45 minutes yesterday listenting to the album Rediscovered by Howard Tate for the first time in an age.

He sadly passed in December 2011 at the age of 72 and he had a quite extraordinary back story which I touched on here.

I thought that for today that I should maybe post something a little lighter and my thoughts turned  to Tate & Lyle who are most famous as a sugar producer.

Time then for a couple of Tate songs and a couple of Lyle songs.

In the Tate corner we obviously have Howard himself with the song Mama Was Right. He is joined by Little Man Tate and Reflection in His Sunglasses.

Lyle Lovett was the obvious Lyle choice and here he is with L.A. County. Finally we are off to Largs to catch up with Gallagher & Lyle with Heart on my Sleeve.

I hope this is sweet enough for you and that it doesn't rot your teeth too much.
