Read all about it ....
New series alert covering Newspapers and associated News songs.
I use the term newspaper lightly when refering to the Murdoch rag News of the World which closed in 2011 following a phone hacking scandal which led to a public backlash and withdrawal of advertising.
No great loss as I'm sure you will all agree.
Where possible for the next 8 weeks I will attempt to include a couple of songs which can be linked with newspaper titles and a couple about news in general
It makes sense therefore to start this series with The Jam and their song News of the World..
Slighty more obscure I give you Martha and the Muffins with Echo Beach. It is unlikely that you could pick up the Liverpool Echo there.
For news in general this weeks offerings are Ten Second News by Son Volt and Bad News Blues by Lucinda Williams.
Make sure that you contact your local newsagent to ensure that the news is delivered next Thursday

I used to have that single by the Jam
ReplyDeleteWow, if you'd have asked me when TNOTW bit the dust (and good riddance), I'd have said 7 or 8 years ago, tops. But 15! Where does the time go?
ReplyDeleteI still have that 7" single by The Jam.
As for news in general, am looking forward to News at Ten by The Vapors making an appearance.
Husker Du's Turn On The News too
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to start, my favourite early Jam song (sorry Paul!)
ReplyDeleteI look forward to hearing something from my second favourite Queen album, also named after the above rag... or maybe not.
ReplyDeleteI suppose we all think our current time has the monoply of bad news - it certainly seems that way but that great Lucinda Williams track came out in 2020 but could easily have been written for now. I don't imagine Loudon Wainwright's Carmine Street will make this series but it's a great albeit sombre track about 'the news'. He wrote that in 1999. Looking forward (no really I am!) to see what comes up in the next few weeks
ReplyDeleteSunday Papers by Joe Jackson would have fitted in nicely to this one.
ReplyDeleteAnd yup, I still have my copy of The Jam single.
