Four weeks into the Americana compilations series and we are still to get to an American release, The first three were UK releases and for week four we have Awesome - a compilation of American Bands on a Dutch label named after a German town namely Munich Records
I can't remember where or when I picked up this 2001 compilation but I do remember that on the back of hearing Weightless I immediately sought out the same titled album by Jackpot from whence it came.
Sadly I never got to see them but I did manage to see my other two choices off the album.
I saw Johnny Dowd play in Glasgow and it was pretty intense. My pal had to take refuge in the upstairs bar. At least that was his excuse.
South San Gabriel were a band who were led by Will Johnson who also at the same time led another band called Centro-matic who also appear on the album. It gets a bit confusing as the album Songs/Music which I have is credited to both bands. I'm pretty sure that I have seen both bands live as well as Will Johnson performing solo - do keep up at the back!
The Baptist Generals and The Gourds are probably the best known of the other artists on the record - tracklist here
Johnny live is an experience. Did he do his punk version of "Smile" by Judy Garland?
ReplyDeleteNot that I recall but he may well have done
DeleteI've several albs by both SSG and Centro-matic which I havent played in 20 plus years. I loved the latter at the time - some great tracks and it was a shame they were'n't better known
