She's The One That Keeps The Dream Alive

Us bloggers are occasionally guilty of ignoring an artist's greatest hits and focusing on some of their lesser known numbers.
I'm as guilty as the next man or woman given that I have featured Cornershop on more than one occasion but never with their biggest hit and their only number 1 Brimful of Asha.
A song based on the history of Indian film culture namechecking Asha Boshle a playback singer in countless Hindi films.
It originally only reached number 60 in the UK charts in 1997 before reaching number one in February 1998 with a remixed version by Norman Cook.
I've had the album version from When I Was Born for the 7th Time since it's 1997 release picking up the above CD single version some years later.

  1. I agree that we often feature less known songs, CC. I like the Norman Cook remix much and saw them once live with Beck as support. Probably we should post our much loved hits one day.

  2. I like how, when the remix hit #1, Cornershop appeared on TOTP and played the original version, to the bemusement of the studio crowd.

  3. I do much prefer the remix. Cook although not quite in the same league as Weatherall can turn in some pretty brilliant refits.

  4. The remix is new to me. Cook certainly upped the ante. Good stuff.

  5. The parent album is very good.

Saw Cornershop as part of a Celtic Connections thing at The Bridge in Easterhouse a few years back. They were far better than I had expected as the reputation, certainly when they first appeared on the scene in the early 90s, was that the live shows were more miss than hit.
