Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight

When I haven't been participating in international blogging conventions over the last few days I have been mostly stuck up a Ryan Adams cul-de-sac
I blame KC myself for posting Gold. This in turn had me looking out his self titled album.

For those of you who enjoyed his early solo stuff before he became pretentious and prolific can I recommend that you look backwards rather than forwards and listen to a bit of Whiskeytown.
I've been listening to Faithless Street this week and what a magnificent album it is.
You should do like wise and while you are at it throw in Strangers Almanac and Pneumonia.
You can thank me later
Interestingly on Faithless Street he only writes some of the songs including some collaborations with other band members.
That would change fairly rapidly and the rest is history
Ryan Adams and Caitlin Cary have talked on numerous occasions about reforming Whiskeytown at some stage and who knows it may well happen

  1. I saw Whiskeytown at The Borderline in 1998, where they were joined onstage for a couple of numbers by James Iha, then of the Smashing Pumpkins. Iha had recently issued his first solo LP, the alt-country tinged 'Let it Come Down' and Whiskeytown covered 'Be Strong Now' from it in his honour. The show finished with Ryan Adams performing a seemingly impromptu solo performance of Johnny Cash's 'I Still Miss Someone'. T'was a good night.

    1. I used to look longingly at the list of bands playing The Borderline.
Doesn't seem quite as impressive these days

    2. It was Americana heaven for a few years. I saw a lot of good shows down there, including Ryan solo in 2001.

  2. That would have been a show Swede.

Strangers Almanac is the one I reach for most.

  3. I have SA and Pn, but not this one. Must hunt it down.

Still can't get into his new album. I like the first track, but then it's just more of the stuff he's been peddling for the last 10 years.

  4. I bloody love Whiskeytown. Old Ryan was great for a while and he still can be when the mood takes him.
