Some Cheerful Tunes to Start Your Week .... Not

Sometimes when you are looking for inspiration for a post it can come from fairly obvious places.
George commented on my recent Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers post that Elijah put him in mind of The Handsome Family.
This got me thinking that the husband and wife pairing of Brett and Rennie Sparks were due an airing.
Wiki describes there music as a blend of traditional country, bluegrass and murder ballads and that is good enough for me.
The first song featured The Sad Milkman is taken from their 2000 album In The Air on Carrot Top/lLoose Records.
The second is their contribution to Down to the Promised Land  the compilation album from the same year celebrating the first five years of Bloodshot Records.

Your week can only get more cheerful!

  1. I love the Handsome Family, even saw them live a few years back (when I was allowed out). Their last couple of releases have been a bit of a struggle though... the Sparks need reigniting.

    See what I did there?

  2. I vaguely remember those days Rol
So them myself two or three times - their patter was good
I drifted away from them after a while.
Maybe a bit one-dimensional? (them not me!)

  3. "Guy next door plays Dylan til four
I bang on the wall, but he won't turn it down..."

    What's not to love?!?!?!

  4. I've seen the Handsomes a couple of times now (at The Greystones in Sheffield) and I've a mate who loves 'em beyond measure but for me there's just something missing. I get the back of beyond, small town America and grumpy husband/wife stage schtick etc etc but...... I think the fault probably lies with me but hey!
