Namechecked - Johnny Rotten

The king is gone but he's not forgotten
This is  the story of Johnny Rotten

Johnny Rotten, or to give him his Sunday name John Lydon, is namechecked on not one but two songs on Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps
I couldn't decide which one to feature so being a generous person I thought I would give you both.
Also I was in a quandary as to whether to play the Sex Pistols or Public Image Ltd.
Good though the Pistols were this is possibly his best six minutes.
And remember Anger is an Energy
More namechecking next week.

  1. Great selections all round. Someone should put together a Public Image Ltd ICA.

  2. I was listening to Rust Never Sleeps the other day. Welfare Mothers is such a great dumb song.

  3. As TS says, great all round. I remember when I first heard Neil's namechecking of John on the radio. Being young, naive and only interested in the 'now', I didn't really know who Neil was at the time; he was just someone from thee olden dayes. So his reference to my then idol seemed very surreal.

  4. Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) is the punkiest song ever! :)

  5. Good call. I can think of only one other artist who namechecks Johnny Rotten twice, and that's Craig Finn of The Hold Steady. Once in Knuckles, once in his solo track No Future.

  6. As they said: great all around. I love both versions of this song. Last night was a special on TV looking back to the times when punk started. Very nice to see all the bands from this starting era again. And Johnny Rotten was so full of anger. A real energy, CC
