Bluegrass Monday # 10

Robbie Fulks or a Portuguese Peanut Farmer?

Just over half way through the month and the post which has attracted the most traffic  so far is Technical  Problems - four lines of text, with no music and no picture. There is a lesson in there somewhere.

I suspect that the statistics are unlikely to change any as I subject you to the tenth and final installment of the Bluegrass Monday series.
I'm beginning to struggle now (Yes, I know there are some out there who think I have been struggling for weeks)
We are off to Chicago to visit the great Robbie Fulks with two of the 13 Hillbilly Giants from his 2000 album of the same name and a welcome return to Bloodshot and Americana after a disappointing and ill advised dalliance with pop and rock (Let's Kill Saturday Night anyone?)
Covers of 13 lesser known country songs . The two I have chosen have a wee bit of a bluegrass feel to them. The instrumental Southern Comfort was originally recorded by Jimmy Arnold with Jimmy Murphy doing the honours with We Live a Long Time To Get Old

There is a terrific cover of  a Porter and Dolly song Jeannie's Afraid of the Dark which I will save for my sick and maimed young children series which will of course also feature The Handsome Family

  1. This week is shaping up very well. First, Plan B, a fantastic album, and now Robbie Fulks. Top stuff. And don't go spoiling it with 10-bloody-cc, or there'lbe no peanuts for you! (and no, that's not a euphemism).

  2. I don't know very much at all about Robbie Fulks, but I enjoyed these two tunes a great deal.
The opening sentence of this post made me laugh out loud.

  3. On the subject of pageviews - it's been very poor this past week. Where the heck is everyone???

  4. I kept Let's Kill Saturday Night on the shelf for a year after it came out because I just couldn't believe my disappointment. Unfortunately, I was correct the very first time I listened to it, and I eventually traded it in. You know what, though? Fulks has made it up to us in spades. His work on Bloodshot is peerless... as your choices today illustrate. Well done, CC.

  5. I feel like I have to defend Let's Kill Saturday Night. I love that song - but not in Robbie Fulks' version. My first introduction to it was the cover by 5 Chinese Brothers, who don't pretend it's anything other than a rock song, and play the hell out of it. I do love Fulks' country tunes, though, and thanks for posting these!

  6. Let's Kill Saturday Night is on my ever-growing wishlist. Should it not be?

I was considering Jeannie's Afraid of the Dark for my Twilight Zone Top Ten... but it was too dark. As were most Handsome Family songs. I do love the Handsome Family though (probably for that very reason).
