An Allman Dilemma

I am currently reading My Cross to Bear the autobiography of Gregg Allman written in conjunction with music journalist Alan Light
It's not exactly taxing stuff. It is written in a chatty and colloquial way almost as if he is sitting having a beer with you and shooting the breeze and is full of the usual sex and drugs and rock'n'roll cliches.
It also covers the death of Duane Allman at only 24 following a motorcycle accident and  Gregg's marriage to Cher.
And now to the dilemma. It has got me wondering as to whether I should have any Allman Brothers records on the shelves and if so which ones. I would imagine that there are one or two good ones out there and some real duds but I don't really know enough about them. Any advice?
I suppose the logical place to start would be the much lauded 1971 live album At Fillmore East the last one featuring Duane.

Gregg Allman - Midnight Rider

Cher - For What It's Worth

  1. Fillmore East indeed, and do get the deluxe edition. Live at Ludlow's Garage is fine, too. For studio stuff try Eat a Peach. Cheers!

    1. Eat a Peach.

Reporter wanted to know why the Allman Brothers weren't more involved with the protests...wanted to know what they were doing for peace.

Duane said..."I eat a peach for peace...The two legged Georgia kind."

  4. I'm loathed to strike a negative vibe, but I'm afraid the Allmans never did anything for me. I owned 'Fillmore East' for a period in the mid-1970's, but quickly dispatched it.

    2. Amongs the tracks is a 13 minute song, and 18 minute one, and one lasting 23 minutes. That last single song is only 5 minutes shorter than Pet Sounds

    3. Almost prog rock length tracks there George!

  5. I love the Allman Brothers...Southbound, Melissa, Midnight Rider, One Way Out (Elmore James), Whipping Post, Ramblin' Man, Statesboro Blues, Blue Sky...and on.
Duane was a wizard with slide guitar. In fact I'm downloading Ain't Waistin' No More Time (I still can't get my lap top to communicate with the damn phone).
