Every Picture Tells a Story

The picture in question is our Rodney performing at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games which are currently underway in my home town.
It was a somewhat quirky ceremony and like the curate's egg it was good in parts.
Sadly you couldn't really say that Rod's performance was particularly good. Time to hang up those golden tonsils I feel.
What is good however is 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story. So good in fact that it features in George's Top 10 Albums of All Time series
At the time I confessed to not owning this record and was quite rightly roundly chastised by all and sundry including myself.
I have since remedied this glaring omission by purchasing a copy from Oxfam's music shop on Victoria Road.
As you may expect given the album is 43 years old the album is a bit crackly in places but the quality still shines through.

  1. It's a great record CC, indeed. And 'Tomorrow is a Long Time' is one his best songs ever. But I prefer his second record 'Gasoline Alley' as his best.
    Cheers, Walter

    1. We'll see. It is a moveable feast and probably contains many of the usual suspects
Be careful what you wish for as Springsteen and the Clash would no doubt feature!

  3. Early Rod = good, really good in places. I am also 43 years old and your description fits me perfectly too!

    1. Are you prone to a small jump from time to time??

  4. What a great album CC. A Top Ten countdown would be good, was thinking of doing mine but always find it hard to narrow down to 10. There are 5 or 6 perennials and the remainder change from time to time.

  5. Well CC, it's difficult to name my top ten records. And I think it will be a very good idea to introduce you to my top 100 records. Let's make a countdown these days. And be sure Sir Rod will appear at the top of the list. I listened these evening to a lot of old songs by him. and Tomorrows .... is definetly one of his best - and the lyrics as well. I get a shiver listening to this:

If today was not a crooked highway
If tonight was not a crooked trail
If tomorrow wasn't such a long time
Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
If I could hear her heart a softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

I can't see my reflection in the water
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
Or can't remember the sounds of my own name

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
And if I could hear her heart a softly poundin'
Yes if only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

There's beauty in the silver, singin' river
There's beauty in the sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothin' else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true loves eyes

Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
I could hear her heart a softly poundin'
Yes if only if she was lyin' by me
And I'd lie in my bed once again

  6. I loved the dancing Tunnocks Tea Cakes and the absolutely wonderful version of The Freedom Come All Ye.It was what it was and atleast we can take the piss, even if very few realise it. I very nearly gave up Twitter due to all the shite about it on there. What the fuck did they want some obscure indie and a play full of existential angst from 7:84 Theatre Group. Funny, I don't remember the Manchester opening ceremony being all Joy Division and the like. Still think that the Scottish Team should have come out to Positive Education by Slam.

Never been a big fan of Rod The Fraud myself but I do like certain things.
